Read report: hills like whiteelephants
Hills like white elephants is a fantastic story in which every word in the text plays a role in what the story means. At first view it is very confusing in many aspects, especially insome sentences that apparently don’t have any sense with the story of a couple of foreigners that have a normal discussion. But the story is more than this, is really amazing the number of meanings andinterpretations that the text has inside.
What was the best of the story?
For me the best of the text was to discover all these meanings and the intrigue of know that maybe there are more secretsand discoveries to find. All started with many questions, what was going on with jig? Of what was the operation about? Was she sick? But same reading was the one who responded many of my questions.What represented a white elephant?
I started to look for the meaning of the text especially the title “hills like white elephants” in internet I found that in the Christian religion an elephantrepresents the chastity and the innocence and the shape of white hills could represent the shape of a pregnant woman, since that moment all the story had sense.
Based on this information I understood thatwhat they were planning was an abortion, and the discussion that they were having enveloped all the moral conflict that this decision covers. I think that it was being a very difficult decision forboth of them especially for jig. She knew that if she give birth her baby all her life would be more difficult and the love that his boyfriend or whatever they were, won’t be the same.
I think that theAmerican was agree with the abortion because he doesn’t want that his life as he knew it change but however he did want to force jig to do something that she didn’t like.
