Introduction
Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3), commonly referred to as baking soda, is an ingredient used in baking among other household tasks. When putin the oven, exposed at a heat above 60 degrees Celsius, it decomposes into water and carbon dioxide. When this takes place, the pastry will be left with a light and fluffyporous texture. The purpose for this experiment was to measure how much sodium carbonate a thermal decomposition reaction of NaHCO3 releases.
Procedure
Materials
• Gogglesand apron
• Ring stand, ring, and clay triangle
• Crucible & Crucible tongs
• Bunsen burner
• Gram Scale
• 3.0 g NaHCO3
Method
1) The crucible was weighed on thescale. 3.0 g of NaHCO3 were put into the crucible and both crucible and NaHCO3 were weighed together. All measurements were recorded. By subtracting the mass of the crucible from themass of both crucible and NaHCO3, the NaHCO3 mass was calculated.
2) The balanced chemical equation (2NaHCO3 Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2) and the NaHCO3 mass calculated in step 1 wereused to carry out stoichiometric calculations to predict the mass of Na2CO3 that would be released after the reaction.
3) The bunsen burner was set up ready for use with itsrespective ring stand, ring, and clay triangle.
4) The crucible containing 3.0 g of baking soda was heated for 7 to 8 minutes with a low flame (as a precaution measure). Thiswas observed and observations were recorded. Crucible tongs were used to place the crucible on a flat surface.
5) The crucible was left to cool. After it was cold enough totouch, the crucible was weighed. The mass of the crucible alone was subtracted from crucible and product mass to obtain the product mass.
