Escoliosis
Definition:
Scoliosis is a lateral deviation of the spine with a rotation of the immediate vertebrae.
This deviation affects the structures of the shoulders, the back and pelvis. Atfirst it doesn´t hurt, but it eventually wears out and starts to hurt.
Epidemiology:
It usually appears during the adolescence and manifests itself at the end of physical growth. In 2-4% of thepopulation there is a scoliosis with a curve of more than 10 degrees. A curve below 10 ° is not considered scoliosis.
The disease occurs more frequently in females at a ratio of 4:1 over males.Etiology
It may be born with congenital scoliosis because of the malformation of the bones of the spine.
Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by problems such as poor muscle control, muscle weakness orparalysis due to cerebral palsy or polio.
Idiopathic scoliosis is of unknown cause.
Fisiopatology
• Uneven shoulders
• Uneven Hips
• Triangles asymmetric between trunk / pelvis and arms hanging
•Prominent scapula and next to the greatest convexity
• chest gibbosity
Clinical
Signs and Symptoms
The patient rarely causes symptoms. Only a sore back.
Diagnosis
• Review withscoliometer (a device for measuring the curvature of the spine)
• Radiographs of the spine taken from the front and side
• MRI to notice changes in the neurological examination.
No lab tests are used.Complications
• There may be emotional or self-esteem problems as a consequence of the treatment. (usually with the use of a scoliosis brace)
• Failure of the bone to merge.
• Arthritis of thelumbar spine and low back pain in adults
• Respiratory problems from severe curve
• Damage to the nerve or spinal cord surgery.
• Spine infection after surgery.
Treatment
Treatment depends onthe cause of scoliosis and curve severity and location. It should be checked often in adolescents. The corset is generally recommended to slow the progression of the curve. These devices do not...
