Exploring Global Warming
Global warming is a shocking natural disaster. I do not have much knowledge on the subject; therefore it would make for an excellent exploratory topic. I have heard of many possible effects of global warming, yet nothing is certain. How terrible could the effects of global warming really become? Could there be any positive effects as well? I will research thistopic to better understand the possibilities of disaster. Fortunately, our nation is taking an approach to keep us from further damaging our environment since global warming is thought of so negatively. It would be essential for people to better understand global warming and how it works, I doubt if most Americans really understand the concept. When discussing global warming, many people seem to onlyfocus on the “warming” effect on the earth, but it is this effect which in fact will cause some places to cool and significantly lower average temperatures. This raises a question I would like to be answer. Could the effects of global warming actually just shift the planets climatic traits? This would not necessarily be harmful; people would eventually adapt to temperature changes and learn tocope with new geographical features.
As I further explored my topic, I decided it was time to use the internet as a source. I typed “positive aspects of global warming” into the Google Scholar search engine and was presented with numerous articles on my topic. As I read through some articles and their summaries, one article really caught my attention. The article from the Cato Institute web page,“Is Global Warming Always Bad?” by Patrick J. Michaels offered much unexpected reasoning as to why scientists classify global warming as a natural adversity. The issue is money. Once again, questions soared into my mind and I was left confused and taken aback. I believe it is common knowledge that any environmental change should have positive and negative effects. However, the article states:“Alarming news often leads to government funding, funding generates research, and research is the key to scientists' professional advancement.” So does this mean that scientists have to frighten the world just to receive funding? In essence, if we were presented with positive feedback about global warming, it would not be given as much importance. This leads to my next point; there are positive effects ofglobal warming. For one, some regions will experience warmer winters. Also, for some dry regions of the world, we can expect more rainfall, and vice versa for wet regions. This increase in rainfall signifies additional food production for certain locations around the world. All effects of global warming are not harmful; the world’s climate will balance itself accordingly throughout all of theworld’s regions. As a final point, if global warming proves to be negative in a particular location and results in lessening plant and animal life, other regions of the world will experience growth in population ranges for other plants and animals. People are now taking very optimistic approaches to battle global warming. Many automobile and oil companies are formulating ways to create more fuelefficient vehicles which emit fewer pollutants and toxins. Many appliances are also being produced to be much more energy efficient. Lists and suggestions are publicized constantly to allow individuals an accessible way to reduce energy consumption, which will noticeably help them live a better and healthier life with or without global warming. Another website, globalwarming-facts.info, offers a listof 50 things which can be done to stop global warming. The list seems very effective and could greatly increase our quality of life if everyone took some of these approaches into consideration. According to the site, “Global Warming is a dramatically urgent and serious problem. We don't need to wait for governments to find a solution for this problem: each individual can bring an important...
