La Hemofilia
The word Hemophilia comes from the Greek words ‘’ haima’’ which means blood and ‘’filia’’ which means affection. This disease is a hereditary condition. This means that it istransferred from a mother to her child. There are some occasions that the father carries the gene. In this case none of the sons will have Hemophilia, but the daughters will carry the gene.
The blood of ahemophiliac does not clot normally. If someone that has this disease and this person cuts his skin, blood will start to run quickly out of the body without stopping. A normal person would’ve stopbleeding right away. For hemophiliacs it’s very dangerous if they have internal bleeding, because if they do, this could harm vital organ such as the heat and brain. If treatment is being used is couldbe very dangerous for hemophiliacs, because the patient is exposed to a possible infection from transfusions.
The reason why hemophiliacs bleed for a long time is because their bodies don’t havethese factors called factor VII, factor IX, and factor XI. So, as hemophiliacs don’t produce these factors in their blood, there must be a temporary barrier in order to stop the bleeding.
For patientswith this disease there are two ways of treatments. The first one is that they can use factor of donated plasma and apply it in their bodies. This one is not very trustful now days, because peoplefrom the past, where applied this donated plasma and got infected with blood-borne pathogens, such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. And the second one, is that its prepared synthetic (recombinant)factors using especially prepared mammalian cells. This treatment is widely used.
The Royal Disease has been named like that because of the royal house of Great Britain. Queen Victoria was a carrier ofthis sex-linked trait. This trait was carried through the first generation, to the third one. And that’s why Hemophilia is also known as The Royal Disease.
