ABSTRACT

Globalization has caused the world in general to give more importance to English and, in some cases, over-privilege it in comparison to other languages. Therefore, it is important to research whether this fact has an influence in politeness as it is taught in our context.
This research deals with the way in which three groups understand and claim theywould respond when faced with certain illocutionary acts. Such response is what is considered to be a perlocutionary effect and it can be classified as either polite or impolite.
The aim of thisresearch is to show the likenesses and differences in the answers of Spanish monolinguals and Spanish – English bilinguals to a short questionnaire in either Spanish or English. The questionnaire held thesame questions in both languages. The instrument was created in order to collect data on politeness as a perlocutionary effect, so every question had two possible answers to choose from, one politeand one impolite.
Within the three questioned groups, there was a difference made between men and women, just to ensure control over the gender variable. Making that division, the numericalconclusion showed two noticeable groups according to the percentages of politeness. The first group is formed by monolingual women and bilingual women answering in Spanish. The second group contains all ofthe other sub-groups, which are, monolingual men, bilingual men answering in Spanish and both bilingual men and women answering in English. Although the results were somewhat unexpected, they highlightthe importance of researching more on the subject of speech acts in bilinguals.
