Para poder explicar la trayectoria artística de Juanes hay que remontarse a finales de la década de los 80, cuando un joven Juan Esteban, siguiendo su pasión por la canción y el ritmo, crea una banda demetal con tan sólo 15 años. No tarda en darse cuenta de que lo que ha empezado como un simple juego de niños es en realidad el inicio de un brillante futuro profesional.
Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez nace en los años 70 en el seno de una familia colombiana donde se vive la música con pasión. Su padre y sus hermanos le enseñan a tocar la guitarra y siendo aún un crío ya está muy familiarizado coneste género artístico. Por eso, en su adolescencia en la ciudad de Medellín, se decide a organizar Ekhymosis, con el que dará sus primeros pasos profesionales en los mercados musicales.
Ocho años de historia y cinco álbums publicados avalan la calidad de las propuestas de Ekhymosis y de Juan Esteban como su guitarrista y cantante. Todo este tiempo y el trabajo creativo hecho le dan al músicocolombiano la suficiente experiencia como para decidirse a iniciar su camino artístico en solitario cuando en el año 1995 se disuelve la banda.
En 1998 Juan Esteban deja su Colombia natal y se traslada a vivir a Los Ángeles. Su estancia en esta ciudad norteamericana le sirve de inspiración y se convierte en el eje temático de su primer disco como solista, Fíjate bien. Pese a ser su debut, esteálbum es un gran éxito de público y de crítica y le sirve incluso para obtener tres nominaciones a los prestigiosos premios Grammy latinos. Con su nueva vida cambia también su nombre y se convierte en Juanes. En poco tiempo acabará consolidándose como una estrella de la música latina e iniciará una espiral en la que, a lo largo de cuatro años, grabará tres discos y se convertirá en el artistalatino de más prestigio internacional.
