Summary – The Story of a Man Named Job
In this writing, Kushner speaks of the poem based on the life of Job. First, he tells the story of Job according to theBible, how the faith of a good man is tested through pain and suffering. Later on, the author speaks of an opposite version of the poem compared to the version in the Bible. In this version, Jobcomplains to God for all the illness that he is going through. Kushner presents three statements in the composition - which God is all-powerful, God is just and fair, and Job is a good man and a faithfulChristian. He emphasize that these are truth when Job is wealthy, and that these three no longer make sense when Job is suffering. His first argument is that if Job is no longer a good man, then God isstill all-powerful, just, and fair; but if Job is a good man then God must be not all-powerful or just and fair. It is emphasize in the poem that Job is not a bad man, he might not be perfect, but hetries his best to be an honorable man. The second argument presented is that God is not just and fair, which affirms that Job is a good man. However, this argument flaw is that God is stillall-powerful; therefore, He decides when He is fair or not. This gives a bad impression of what Job's friends told him about God that He has a purpose for everything. The third argument and Kushner's bestconclusion is that of the rejection of God being all-powerful. Therefore, God is just and fair, and Job is a good man, because we do not know for sure if God is all-powerful or not. That knowledge isbeyond the readers understanding. (Kushner)
