Summer Learning 2015 For Returning DCI Students
While summer should be restful and relaxing, it’s important that students not lose the academic
skills they worked so hard to gain during the year. Many studies show that students come to
school in the fall with
months
less knowledge and skills than they had in June. Doing some English, Math, and Language work each week will help students start the school year right!
Work can be done on Chromebooks, which students can keep over the summer in most cases.
If students do not have Chromebooks or internet access, the school will be open on Tuesdays
and Thursdays during July, from 10am to 2pm, with staff supervision, extra Chromebooks, and
internet. Work can also be done on other computers such as at public libraries.
English Work: Students taking Reading Support will participate in the Achieve3000 summer
program. We are communicating with parents of those students directly. Students not taking
Reading Support will participate in the Curriculet/USA Today summer reading challenge:
● All students will be expected to read 40 articles and complete the comprehension
questions that pop up as they read.
●Weekly calls/emails will be made home to families of students who are not meeting
reading benchmarks:
○ at least 4 articles read per week (10 weeks of break 40 total)
○ 20 articles completed by the week of July 20th
● Students will set up accounts in English class.
● Parents will be able to set up parent home account to monitor student progress and this can be referenced during phone calls/emails home. Students can and should add their
parent to their account. They can do this by filling out the popup message that comes
up when they log in or by clicking on their name in the upper right hand corner, clicking
on settings, and scrolling to the bottom.
This will be a great way to keep up with current events and keep reading skills strong!
Math Work: Summer math work will vary depending on the current math class students are
taking.
● Math 6: At least 1/2 hour of ST Math and 1/2 hour of the Khan Academy G6 'Mission' per
week
● Math 7: At least 1/2 hour of Ten Marks math and 1/2 hour of the Khan Academy G7
'Mission' per week
● Math 8: At least 1/2 hour of Ten Marks math and 1/2 hour of the Khan Academy G8
'Mission' per week For ST Math and Khan Academy, students either have an account or will be set up with their
account. For Ten Marks, parents need to set up an account (this is a separate summer program
from the Ten Marks students have used this year; it can, however, be the same summer
account parents created last year):
● Go to
summer.tenmarks.com.
● Create an account:
○ Choose your school’s zip code as 20010
○ Choose the school as District of Columbia International School
○
○Follow the instructions to create a student account
Write down your login information and your child’s username and password in a
safe place!
● At the end of the summer, the program will create a report card for you to give to your
child’s math teacher!
Summer learning loss is a huge issue in mathematics. Keeping up with math this summer will
prepare you for success next year!
Language Work:
Please see the following for information on language work. Students should
spend at least an hour per week keeping up with their language. Languages get lost if they don’t
get used!
● Chinese students
○ Review all vocabulary from this school year on Quizlet
○ Practice reading online textbook
○ Write weekly journal in Chinese in their Google doc
○Watch Travel in Chinese Lesson 1 Lesson 30
