GET MARRIED OR LIVE IN FREE UNION

In Colombia there are two kinds of stable relationships, “Marriage” and “Free Union”. Everyone knows that both methods are effective to live with a couple;“Marriage” is a marital bond between two people accepted not only by church but also legal provision. On the other hand, there is “Free Union” that is another marital status and very used by the majority ofpeople in our country. Currently there are different opinions about which method is the best for sharing a lifetime with another person. But the principal discussion is focused living in “Free Union”because some families are not in agreeing with that method for religious and cultural reasons.
According to “The National Registry of Colombia” in our country there are fewer people who decide tomarry. For example in 2009, 63.926 marriages were registered, less than half recorded in all of 2010. Although in our country statistics show an increase in the relations of "Free Union", but to somepeople "Marriage" is still the best way to legalize the union with a partner.
More than 15 thousand couples divorced in Colombia last year before notaries. On 22 March 2012 the Superintendent ofNotaries and Registries of Colombia, Jorge Enrique Vélez, reported that a total of 15,326 divorces were processed during 2011 in Colombia, in proceedings conducted before the notary. He said in November of2011 was the month with the greatest number. During this period there were 2,036 couples who decided to end their marriage. By contrast, he said: “January was the month in which divorce occurred less,because only 833 couples take this decision”. Also, according to the "National Registry of Colombia," Bogota leads the number of divorces, with a totally 4.829. Followed by Valle del Cauca with 2.669,Antioquia with 1.498, Santander with 1,118 and Atlántico with 792.
