THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
In the first chapter is when Holden introduces himself. He describes who he is and the things he hates. He talks about his parents and the manner of themselves being quite touchy, specially his father. He talks about his brother and how he used to be a regular writer to a man in Hollywood and how he used to have not that much money to someone who has lot ofmoney to buy a Jaguar. He also describes where he studies, which is a campus. He starts with the magazines that are always showing this some hot guy in a horse jumping over a fence and says that he’d never seen a horse around the place. Anyways, the football game with Saxon Hall that Saturday, telling that he was up in a hill that was in the Revolutionary War and all, where he could see the entirefield. He suddenly started talking about the girls that were there and that he doesn’t see many girls. Then he jumps into the reasons why he was on Thomsen Hill instead down in the game, was because he’d just got back from New York with the fencing team. Holden then says that he left all the foils and equipment and stuff on the subway. The team ostracized him the whole way back on the train. Theother reason was because he was on his way to say good-bye to Mr. Spencer, besides he wanted to talk to him before he went home. Then he tells that they kicked him out of Pencey, because he was flunking four subjects and not applying himself and all. He started thinking about these memories with his friends and everything and suddenly started running to the main gate. He didn’t had too much windto breath because he was really tired, also because he smoked a lot and made him barely breathing. Then he continue running and finally he get to the old Spencer’s house and rang the bell, he waited for a bit of time until Mrs. Spencer opened the door. Mrs. Spencer was glad to see him and she knew he was visiting his husband so she let him come into his room.
Chapter two then continues with Holdendescribing Mr. and Mrs. Spencer having their seventy or more years old. Then he enters to Mr. Spencer’s room and he noticed that his door was opened but he didn’t enter just by walking in, he stop and quite knocked the door. They both started talking and Mr. Spencer told Holden to sit down on this uncomfortable bed that was hard as a rock. Then he started asking about the meeting he had with Dr.Thurmer and so Holden starts talking about the chat that they had. He told him that Mr. Thurmer has been stating about life being a game and all, having to play it according to the rules. Mr. Thurmer tells him that effectively life is a game and that you have to play it according to the rules. He asked the about Holden parents and how they are going to be when they received the news of Holdenbeing kicked out again from this other school. Then he mentions that he had the pleasure to meet Holden’s parents and said that they are grand people and by mentioning that word, grand, Holden says that he could puke every time he hears that word. Holden then realizes that Mr. Spencer’s was reading the Atlantic Monthly and that his room smells like Vicks nose drops. Without any other comments Mr.Spencer says that he flunk Holden because he knew absolutely nothing about history and suddenly he makes Holden go and get his own exam paper. Then he gets it to him and he started reading Holden’s essay about the Egyptians and continued then reading the little note Holden. He seemed really disappointed about Holden so he proceed asking him about any problems with the last two schools he had went to,and Holden the tells that the main reason that he left Elkton Hills was because he was surrounded by phonies. Then he continues asking him about his future and that if he cared about it and that if just didn’t cared that he will, but that it will be too late. He also says that he tries to help him, but Holden, he just think that they were too much on opposite sides so he just says that he needed...
