The dictionary A dictionary is a reference book to obtain informationabout words. it is important to know how to find all the information in the dictionary. to use it efficiently you should de able to:
1. Choose the appropriate dictionary for the word you are lookingfor.
2. Choose, among various definitions, the most appropriate one according to the context in which the word is found.
3. Find synonyms.
4. Look for verbs in their infinitive form.
5. Understandthe key words used in the dictionary to identify the use or uses of a word. Generally, these key words are defined and explained in the first pages of the dictionary.
6. Recognize the terminationsof a word in order to look for the stem. (prefixes-suffixes)
An English dictionary can give you these kinds of informations:
a) Main entry word: words written in alphabetical order and boldface typeb) Syllable Division: This helps in spelling and pronouncing words and indicates where the word should be divided at the end of a line.
c) Usage: a dictionary will tell you whether a word ischiefly british or american, of if it is: - Colloquial: word used in conversation informal reading. - Slang: coined terms and new meanings atracted to stablished terms. - Obsolete: term no longer used butoccurs in earlier writings. - Archaic: term rarely used today. - Poetic: Term used in poetry. - Dialect: Term used in some geographical areas
