Introduction

There is no doubt that the most important resource that students have for learning English is their dictionary. A dictionary is a reference book that focuses on defining words and phrases, including multiple meanings.  Dictionaries are not only a tool for private or individual learning problems, but they can also become sort of other communicative and interactive activities. Byusing dictionaries as a resource we can help students develop their confidence as language learners. An important benefit of this is that students will be exposed to a great deal of language that will help them experience and explore it.

The decision whether to use a dictionary or not depends upon the task at hand. During our whole life, as students, we had experiences in the use of dictionary, for example: each time the English teacher left a homework for spelling, when we were in elementary school and there were lots of phonics homework’s, certainly not only in English but also in Spanish and even for French we have used the dictionary. At school in French class, the teacher used to leave a vocabulary of 50 to 60 words and we had to translate them and illustrate them.

In thefollowing project, we are going to make a list of different irregular and regular verbs focusing on those that have sound endings in e, in a consonant ending, sh, x or s, with “y” ending preceded by a vowel and also by a consonant. Whenever we learn a new word, we should look up the pronunciation ourselves and try to pronounce the word with the correct number of syllables and the correct stress. There are many other skills that the students need to master such as finding secondary meanings, learning how to use the cross-references in the dictionary and getting students to rank unknown words by importance to train them to make decisions over which words to look up in a given time. One of the most frustrating things for students occurs when they look up a word, only to find that they hadalready marked it, but had forgotten all about it. The use of word card can help to solve this problem, as will a lot of fluent reading with graded readers. The use of the dictionary is so important in our lives, since every time we open and read it, we can learn enrich our language, culture and even foreign languages, by this way gaining lots of knowledge.
