SHOULD CONVICTED CRIMINALS BE ELIGIBLE FOR SOCIAL WELFARE

Voltaire once said : “The punishment of criminals should be of use; when a man is hanged he is good for nothing.” What this “ordinary” guy tried to say is that rather than punishing a criminal you should give them another chance an reincorporate him or her into society for they will be a great help knowing that he or she got a newchance. In the United kingdom, Victoria Twiddy was a convict since she was 17 for shoplifting and she was convicted several times for other types of crimes and also for recidivism. Now the British government department of justice has developed his green paper on sentencing and rehabilitation policy. In which he states that every criminal should be “punished” by serving the community rather than sent tojail for a “comfortable” life with food and shelter without effort. Victoria was benefitted by it and she hasn’t been processed as reoffender since 2009 by serving her community in a positive way. Although many people think that criminals are degenerated human beings that don’t deserve forgiveness, I strongly believe that criminals should receive social welfare for it will respect their rights ascitizens and human beings, aid them, and successfully reincorporate them into them into society.
Let’s start by showing or telling a simple definition for social welfare. According the Social History webpage defines it as how the people, societies, and communities work together to create minimum standards for living and helping others to face difficulties. (Hick, 1998)

Some people state thatcriminals don’t have rights or don’t deserve them for their past acts lead to someone’s injury, loss, or even dead. Without denying they aren’t guilty for their acts and that they deserve a proper punishment I believe those criminals still have rights , therefore need to be treated and respected as any other human being. Along the history of the United States they were amendments in theConstitution concerning a variety of things, but along those things we find one particular that catches our attentions. “All men are create EQUAL” (Civically Speaking). This phrase clearly makes a point. We all know that men and women come from the natural union of a man and a woman. So, it means that even a criminal remains as a human, and as a human, he enjoy of every single right a human being can have. Some important rights that these criminals received are: they are born free and equal in dignity, no one should never be subject of any degradating punishment, they have to be recognized as a person before the law, among others (UN). It means that they deserve a second chance as you or I deserve.

People also state that criminals should not receive aid or any kind of help due to they don’t needit or simply not deserve it. The question is: Then, how are they going to change without help? Criminals are in need of different sorts of aid such as psychological or physical (having problems with alcolihism or drug addiction). An example occurred in a Mexico prison with a group of 30 men that were once called “the most dangerous men in the prison” for the consumed heroin over 10 to 25 years. But few months ago they let the drugs away by receiving special help given to them by J. Diaz a criminal rehabilitation expert. He said the changed and they don’t want to be in drugs again and started a new honest live out of prison (Shea). A program called Criminion consists on eliminating any factor that creates the different behavior on criminals. The programs focus on determined things in orderto eliminate the behavior; the first point is finding when the person lost his self-respect , which means that at certain point people lose confidence on themselves, resulting in a inminent danger for society. The second is to get the criminal repent on what he has done and “regain” its goodness inside. And the last step is to “attack” the problem which causes the criminal behaviors (Shea)....
