What Is Action Planning?
Action planning helps employees keep up with changes, allowing them to continuously grow and learn by avoiding past performance problems and developing new skills forthe future.
Action planning involves creating a development tool called an action plan that highlights employees’ strengths and areas of weakness. The plan includes improvement goals and strategiesthat will help the employee achieve those goals within an agreed-upon timeline.
The Results of an Action Plan
Action planning is an important part of the coaching
process because:
It keepsthe coachee focused on the specific performance goals between coaching sessions.
It provides the coachee an understanding of how individual performance relates to the overall team and projectgoals.
It provides you a framework on which you can begin planning for your next coaching session.
It enables you to monitor the coachee’s progress by setting obtainable, measurable, and actionablegoals.
The Role of the Coachee
Action planning involves both the coach and the coachee, but it’s the coachee’s responsibility to achieve the goals of the action plan. Therefore, it’s importantthat the coachee has an active role in the action planning process. The coachee “takes ownership” of the plan by identifying the goal that they want to achieve as well as the steps they will take toachieve the goal.

Before your coachee can set achievement goals, you must make sure that they understand what the desired performancelevel is. For example, if your coachee is in sales and you are coaching on improving the number of outbound sales calls they make, the desired performance level could be to make 100 calls per shift.Identify development activities.
