When human beings speak they always attempt to communicate something: a message (or more than one) is implicit or conveyed in their speech. This message is usually formed ordesigned on the basis of beliefs of what the others (hearers) already know. When we tell to someone else ‘Susan got married again’ we are supposing that the hearer already knows thatSusan had married before and the sentence itself tell us that Susan exists. The relationship between the sentences that people utter and the assertions and assumptions behind themis called by linguistic presupposition which plays an important role on the production and comprehension of the speech acts because provide meaning about what the speaker says.It’s very important to distinguish presupposition from entailment. They are different concepts. Entailment is defined as what logically follows from what is asserted in theutterance, symbolized by the sentence, not the speakers. That means speakers have presuppositions while sentences have entailments. Mary’s sister bought two houses. This sentencepresupposes that Mary exists and that she has a sister. This sentence has also the entailments that Susan’s sister bought something; a house, and other similar logical consequences,now she has 2 houses. The entailments are communicated without being said and are not dependent on the speaker’s intention. •One statement entails another when the second is alogically necessary consequence of the first, as Pedro lives in Cumaná entails Pedro lives in Sucre State. An entailment can be seen or conceived as a relation between one sentenceor set of sentences, the entailing expressions, and another sentence, what is entailed. Presupposition can also be seen as a relation between the speaker and a proposition.
