Upper Atmosphere Space Launcher

Flight phases

What is UASL?
The
UASL
project
(Upper
Atmosphere Space Launcher) is an
initiative that aims to perform a
balloon assisted parabolic flight
to the space boundary (100km)
with a P/L of 1kg. This wouldprovide a platform for students,
university researchers and space

companies
to
perform
experiments and certifications in
microgravity, reentry simulation
and studies in space conditions. It
is also a first step on a field of
keen interest for the industry:
launch microsatellites into orbit in
an efficient and unexpensive way.

Why UASL?Conventional space delivery systems
are not optimized for light P/L and
therefore they are very expensive and
unefficient. The main cause is that no
matter how small the P/L is, the
launcher wastes most of its fuel going
through the denser layers of the
atmosphere.
Launching from the stratosphere with
the assistance of helium balloons
minimizes drag losses and allows
optimizing the nozzlefor high
atmosphere conditions.
Fuel needs are significantly reduced,
allowing the rocket to be lighter and
less pollutant. All this together with the
electronics’ miniaturization provides a
wide range of possibilities.

 IT IS OPTIMIZED FOR MICROPAYLOAD
 LAUNCHING FROM THE STRATOSPHERE
o MINIMIZES THE ATMOSPHERIC DRAG
o ALLOWS A BETTER NOZLE
OPTIMIZATION
 IT REDUCES THE AMOUNT OFFUEL
REQUIRED
 IT REDUCES POLLUTION EMISSIONS AND
NOISE NUISANCE.
 IT IS A PLATFORM FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING SKILLS
AMONG MOTIVATED STUDENTS

Who is UASL?

The UASL project nurtures from several EUROAVIA
Terrassa working groups that have gained
experience in the development of several
subsystems, mainly TRT (Terrassa Rocket Team)
andNESLAB (NEar Space LABoratory).

EUROAVIA & AS Terrassa
EUROAVIA is the European association of aerospace students.
Nowadays, it consists of 31 local groups (Affiliated Societies,
AS) among which there is Terrassa. There are more than 1300
members split amongst 17 countries, such as France, Germany,
Italy, Spain, Serbia, Turkey, Greece, etc.
AS Terrassa is one of the most active ASinternationally and
locally, with working groups such as TRT, NESLAB, TGS
(Terrassa Ground Station) and Cansat.

TRT (Terrassa Rocket Team)

NESLAB (NEar Space LABoratory)

TRT is a student initiative whose aims is to
acquire further knowledge in rocketry
engineering, teamwork skills and project
management abilities, putting into practice what
has been learned both in lectures and throughtheir own research.
Having already developed a supersonic rocket,
TRT is now focused on areas such as
aerodynamics,
electronics,
propulsion
or
structures.

NESLAB is a student working group that designs,
builds, and flies platforms to develop near space
activities such as earth and space observation.
The aim of the team is to approach space
investigation from a new perspective and usestratospheric helium balloons to provide results in
an efficient and unexpensive way.

What have we been doing?
UASL Project is the following step of the ladder that aims to take us to orbit. And
looking back, a great deal of the road has already been travelled.
It is worth highlighting the impressive results obtained both by the Blue Thunder, whichobtained the gold medal at the international contest AllYouCanFly 2010 reaching
supersonic speeds, the mission SUN I, and also provided amazing views of the earth
curvature and space darkness in the full sun.
