Terms
and
Concepts:
1. Electromagnetic
radiation
(EMR):
is
radiant
energy,
energy
that
travels
outward
in
all directions
from
its
source.
E.g.
radio
waves,
microwaves,
infrared,
visible
light,
ultraviolet,
x-‐rays,
gamma
rays
and
cosmic
rays.
2. Wavelength:
the
distance
between
adjacent
points
that
vibrate
in
phase
with
one
another
in
a
wave.
3. Frequency: is
the
number
of
cycles
per
unit
of
time.
4. Electromagnetic
spectrum:
all
types
of
EMR
considered
in
terms
of wavelength,
frequency
and
energy.
5. Particle
model:
This
model
describes
EMR
as
a
stream
of
tiny
particles
radiating outward
from
a
source.
6. Wave
model:
This
model
describes
EMR
as
a
stream
of
transverse
waves
radiating
outward
from a
source.
7. Quantum
model:
This
model
describes
light
and
all
other
forms
of
electromagnetic
radiation
as
bundles or
“packets”
of
energy.
8. Photon:
A
discrete
packet
of
energy
associated
with
an
electromagnetic
field.
9.Electric
field:
a
three-‐dimensional
region
of
electrostatic
influence
surrounding
a
charged
object.
10. Magnetic
field:
a three-‐dimensional
region
of
magnetic
influence
surrounding
a
magnet.
11. Capacitor:
two
conductors,
holding
equal
amounts
of
opposite...
