The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most hurtful testimonies of contemporary literature. Written between the years 1942 and 1944, it is the personal diary of a young teenager forced into hiding, it tells of her experiences during the war. Anne and her family go into hiding with the Van Daans during World War II. There place of hiding was in theattic rooms of the office were Anne’s father worked, named by her the “annex”. Eight people shared the attic rooms: Anne, her mother, her father, her sister Margot, Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, the Van Daan's son Peter, and a dentist named Dussel. The diary captures many details about the annex and its occupants. With strong emotion, it also tells about the girl's fears about the war and the turmoil sheundergoes as part of growing up. Anne Frank, was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, where she spent her early years with her parents and Margot. In the summer of 1933, the family moved to Holland, because the Nazis hadbegun to persecute Jews in Germany. In Amsterdam, Anne at first attended a Montessori kindergarten and grade school. After the Nazis invaded Holland in 1940, she had to leave her school for a Jewish one. Anne made a smooth transition in the new school and was a good student. Throughout her childhood, Anne was compared to her older sister, and judged to be less intelligent, talented, and beautiful.She was aware that her parents thought she was inferior and resented their attitude about her. In truth, Anne was a much more lively and personable girl than her sister, but this actions are what made Anne fight with in herself to know her real personality and place in this world and her families.
The Diary of Anne Frank, written over a two-year period, tells about her life while she and herfamily are in hiding in Holland. They are staying in a secret attic of the office building where Mr. Frank used to work in order to escape from the Nazis during World War II. During their stay in the annex, they are supported by several people in the office building, who risk their own lives to insure the secrecy of the Jewish hideout and to provide them with food and basic supplies. Much of Anne'sdiary tells about the daily routine of the occupants of the attic. It also describes in detail the characters of Anne's father, mother, and sister, as well as the characters of the three Van Daans and Mr. Dussel, who share the attic with them. Anne's difficult situation is made more complicated by her own adolescence. Her maturing process, impacted by the misery of her cramped quarters and herconstant fear of discovery and capture, is clearly seen in the pages of the diary. She tells of the conflicts she has with her mother and sister, the support she receives from her father, the love that develops between her and Peter Van Daan, the constant bickering of the inhabitants of the attic, and the deprivations that she must endure while in hiding. She also gives a detailed storyline of what ishappening in the war, especially in Holland, and reflects upon her past life. This simple diary is filled with conflicting emotions, ranging from depression and despair to cheerfulness and pleasure. Anne constantly tries to see the good side of things and to have hope in spite of the misery and fear she faces on a daily basis. She even tells of some humorous incidents that occur within the annex.When the air raids and bombings come closer to the office building, it is harder for her to be positive, but she tries her best to rally her courage. When she falls in love with Peter, she does, indeed, gain a new lease on life and a strong desire to survive.
