38-2 Section Assessment
1. List the organs on the digestigesystem and give the function of each.
The digestive system includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Several major accessory structures including thesalivary glands, the pancreas, and liver, add secretions to the digestive system.
- Mechanical digestion starts in the mouth, the enzymes contained in saliva brake down carbohydrates.
- Theesophagus is the tube that allows the pass of the Bolus down to the stomach by means of muscle contractions.
- Chemical digestion begins in the stomach. Gastric acids take out nutrients from thefood and then pass it down to the small intestine.
- Most of chemical digestion takes place in the small intestine with the absortion of nutrients.
-Its main function is to reabsorb water andmaintain the fluid balance. Vitamins are also taken in through the large intestines wall.
2. Explain the function of the digestive system. The function of the digestive system is to help convert foods into simpler molecules that can be absorbed and used by the cells of the body.
3. How do mechanichaland chemichal digestion work together to break down fluids? There is a release of acids which work along with muscle contractions in order to process the food and absorb nutrients.
4. How doesbile help in the digestion of fats. Bile dissolves and disperes the droplets of fat found in fatty foods, which makes it possible for enzymes to reach the smaller fat molecules and break them down.
5. CRITICAL THINKING What can you infer about the diet of an animal that has large appentice....
