The United States Environmental Protection Agency in riskassessment calculations assumes that the average American adult ingests 2.0 litres per day
In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for tap and public watersystems under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).[40] The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled water as a food product under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).[41] Bottledwater is not necessarily more pure, or more tested, than public tap water.[42] However, there is evidence that the United States federal drinking water regulations do not ensure safe water, as some ofthe regulations have not been updated with more recent science. Dr. Peter W. Pruess, who became the head of the U.S. EPA's division analyzing environmental risks in 2004, has been "particularlyconcerned", and has faced controversy in studies which suggest that regulations against certain chemicals should be tightened.[43]
The health and livelihood of Americans depends on the availability of a safedrinking water supply. In some portions of the nation drinking water is a scarce resource, while in other areas abundant water supplies are available. Community water systems now supply drinkingwater to over 80 percent of the U.S. population. Other citizens drink water from private sources, mostly wells. Increasing water demands from a growing population, economic expansion and increasing useper capita mean that we need to emphasize the wise use, proper management and protection of this resource
Threats to drinking water quality come from animal and plant production agriculture,...
