The Republic of Colombia is a relatively new nation, has less than 200 year history as a republic and like the rest of the Americas, its origins date back to a state just over fivecenturies. However,despite its short existence as a nation, there are several significant events that have occurred, like the invasion or conquest of Colombia; where the first settlements were unsuccessful, andSanta Marta, founded in 1525 by Rodrigo de Bastidas, remains the oldest Spanish city that survives today in the Americas.

The victory at the Battleof Boyacá, on 7 August of 1819 sealed the final defeat of the Spanish army. Days later, the patriot army entered Bogota, while the Spanish troops were seeking to flee to Cartagena or south ofthe country. This battle opened the way tothat carried out the campaign to liberate Venezuela, Quito, and Peru.
