“EL COMERCIO MUNDIAL EN 2011”

Abstract

World trade in goods in 2011 grew by 5% in volume and world production the 2.4 %, figures that indicate a significantslowdown compared with the year 2010, in which trade increased 13.8 % and the production the 3.8 %. It had been predicted that the trade and production grow less in 2011, but there were many setbacks that slowed down the economic activity and trade throughout the year, such as the earthquake, the tsunami and the nuclear accident that Japan suffered in the month of 2011, that sharply reduced exports, inaddition, the floods of Thailand decreased the supply of parts and basic components, as well as global production networks were altered, the riots in countries of North Africa that plunged the export and production of oil and led to aggravate the crisis of the debt of the euro area. During 2011 the exchange rate fluctuated significantly, which amended the company's competitive position. Thefluctuations were largely due to the attitudes toward risk related to the debt crisis of the euro area. The dollar value in 2011 of world merchandise trade increased 19% to 18.2 billion, exceeding the maximum level of 16.1 billion reached in 2008. Much of the growth was due to higher commodity prices, the share of developing economies and the (CIS) Commonwealth of Independent States, the world totalalso increased to 47% for exports and 42% in imports, record levels of data that goes back to 1948.

State of the economy and trade: The growth rate of world output fell 2.4% in 2011 compared with 3.8% the previous year under the weight of the continuing crisis of debt in Europe. The volume of world merchandise trade increased 5% in 2011 increased 6.6%, was at the head of all regions and one of themost important events in 2011 was the contraction in the volume of African exports to 8.3 % due largely to the civil war in Libya, as a result, the country's oil shipments decreased 75% and Japan's exports as Gross Domestic Product GDP also fell 0.5%, while CIS shipments increased 1.8%. The 5 largest exporters of commercial services in 2011 were the United States with 578,000 million dollars, theUnited Kingdom with 274,000 million, Germany with 253,000 million, China with 182,000 million and France with 161,000 million. Prices of manufactured goods that are traded have tended to be more stable than primary products, both before and after the economic crisis, during 2011 the annual growth rates of all types of manufactured goods declined notably, for example: The rate of growth of worldtrade in automotive products declined from 44% in the first quarter of 2010 to 10% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Office equipment and telecommunications had negative growth: Growth rates declined from 14% in the first quarter to 2% in the fourth quarter. It is possible that this kind of nominal exchange rates overstate or understate the effects of exchange rate changes on competitiveness, as aresult, exchange rates, "Effective real" show the average exchange value of a currency against the currencies of many partners, are adjusted to take into account the different rates of inflation, to be a better indicator of export competitiveness of a country.
