All HR professionals at one stage or another will be required to
manage projeets. But few get the chance to learn how to do so
through a structured training programme.
Most ofus have to do it the hard way by jumping straight in and learning
by trial and error, which can be costly. Given that project management can
sometimes be like trying to eat jelly with your hands tiedbehind your back,
what can be done to manage an HR project effectively?
I Projects tend to create change rather
I than maintain the status quo. HR
professionals, with their experience ofinitiating and implementing change, are
therefore particularly well suited to handle
this aspect of project management.
A project has specific goals that must be
achieved and multiple activities thatneed to
be performed to a well-defined schedule. It
moves through four phases, known as
scoping, planning, implementing and
closing. Understanding this process will help
you to know what to do andwhen to do it.
^ DEFINE YOUR PROJEQ
J CUSTOMER'S NEEDS
Z-— At the scoping phase, ask your
customer about the aims ofthe project and
the resources that are available. Find out
what, specifically,is to be achieved and why.
Projects have three key "drivers": time,
cost and quality. All are important, but not
equally so in the customer's mind. For
example, a project manager responsible forintroducing behavioural safety practices to a
firm may want to ask the customer questions
such as: "If it looks like we may need to
spend more on external training to hit new
safety targets, wouldyou be willing to
negotiate an increase in tbe budget?"
Detailed questioning allows a project
manager to be clear about the customer's
priorities at the start, when there's more
time, money andscope for negotiation.
3PLAN YOUR PROJECT
Planning is a curious activity: when
project plans encounter reality, it's
the plans that change, not reality. So why
bother making them at all?...
