On September 2, 2010 the United States President Barack Obama proclaimed that the American combat mission in Iraq had ended. “We have met our responsibility,” he said. “Now it is time to turn the page.”
If only it were that simple. The Iraqi struggle has not yet ended; it is only entering a new phase.
Although we must applaud President Obama’s veracity in keeping his pledge during hiselectoral campaign of withdrawing all combat troops by 2010, it is sad to say that Obama was not thinking clearly of Iraq’s interests when he pressed ahead with this withdrawal. So as not to say that it was a bad decision, we must say that it is terrible timing.
President Obama’s actions seem to come at an arbitrary time, a deadline set by himself but really unrelated to the progress made in Iraq, where a government has yet to be erected and deadly violence shatters the civilians daily life. Sure, the war removed a dictator to deliver democracy to the country but it left civil society in tatters.
The US government should have waited for a new government to be formed, a strong government; a government that will have the authority and respect of the people in order to establish laws that wouldbe enforced. This is not the case in Iraq; nearly six months after it’s most recent national election, Iraq remains a democratic country only in name. Their political parties remain incapable of forming a coalition government. Overall, the Iraqis voted for the same coterie of politicians who’ve made Iraq among the five most corrupt nations in the world.
Meanwhile, Insurgents remain and arecapable of pulling off spectacular and horrific attacks. En example is the recent august 2010 attack which left 60 young men dead, Iraqis who were applying for the country’s armed forces. This goes to show that even people who had a hope and a will to try and better their country were shut down.
The fact of the matter is that there isn’t a government. A government is by definition the politicaldirection and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; it handles the direction of the affairs of these entities. A government is completely necessary to the existence of a civilized society. So it is inconceivable that a country would be at peace when the pillar for order is utterly incompetent.
Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdishpolitician commented to the Washington Post: “They decided to finish it, but they know it’s not over. War with terrorism is here, and Iranian intervention is here. They are lying to tell their people that they left behind a government that is capable and Iraqi security forces that are capable… There is no government, the people don’t have confidence in the Iraqi security forces, and Iraqi sufferingis increasing.”
Furthermore, there is no infrastructure whatsoever. It was either destroyed in the war or never even existed. Today most Iraqis have limited access to essential basic services, including water supply, sanitation and refuse collection. Electricity is also a main concern, it is sporadic and otherwise an unknown luxury in the country even in the capital, Baghdad. While Iraqiofficials are looking for means to quickly restore basic infrastructure services and to improve living conditions, the lack of these services has contributed to the general lack of security in various parts of the country.
Iraq will face and is facing enormous challenges. Bringing this country back on its feet is virtually impossible.
Every aspect of urban life is shattered. There is so much thatneeds mending. It is insoluble for a country in this condition and lacking the necessary resources to rebuild itself. A huge possibility exist that while they meekly intent on doing so, some other greater power will take control of their country once more.
Let us not forget that in Iraq lies the second largest oil reserve in the world. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA),...
