Darfur; “On our Watch”

Everything in Darfur was wrong; and after watching the Frontline documentary the words that came tomy mind were hate, ignorance, selfishness, excuses, denial and shame. Once again crimes against humanity are ignored and the proof that there is no entity in the world that is willing to not onlyensure but fight for the protection of human rights without a personal agenda, is in writing once again.

The United Nations assembly after assembly do nothing but listen to what each country has to sayin a very diplomatic, systematized and let’s not forget timed way, they may vote, they may not vote and it may take years to get to any kind of agreement. The organization has proven to be such afailure in taking significant actions against the biggest conflicts in the world; that it makes me sympathize with the “outrageous” things President Hugo Chavez from Venezuela says in occasions -I betthat more than one head of state was feeling all giddy inside when he spat-out that famous phrase aimed towards George W. Bush once- So I don’t even understand why the U.N is still the organization theworld looks up to find solutions, when it has clearly failed in doing so.

There is no way the people of Darfur can win without the aid of the international community. With a country crippled by atwo decade long civil war and an incompetent and corrupt government who in efforts to protect their new-found wealth are willing to support an army of bandits; how are the people of Sudan in generalever going to win. How can women and children find a safe haven from the atrocities? What will be the future of the children of Sudan be if not to continue the hatred since its either do or die?

Itis understandable that a country that has been in conflict since post-colonial times will pay a high price in the number of lives seized by war. But a country’s sovereignty should not be an excuse...
