According to the English agency “Recruitment and Employment Commission” (REC) more or less 50 % of the CV’s of people between 21 to 25 years old contain grammatical or spelling errors. Otherinteresting fact in this article is that graduate people are more prone to make mistakes than the ones that did not go to the University. It is important to remark these points because theycan give us a particular point of view, and make us wonder: If this happens in English speaking countries, how is the written level in non-English speaking countries Colombia?
English hasbecome the most widely used language in the world. Nowadays in almost every field of knowledge is important to have a domain in this language. In order to illustrate my point, I would like toadd the next quote, despite the fact is in Spanish: “El inglés es el lenguaje fundamental de libros, periódicos, aeropuertos y control del tráfico aéreo, negocios internacionales, conferencias académicas, ciencia, tecnología, diplomacia, deportes, competencias internacionales, música popular y propaganda. Alrededor de dos tercios de científicos del mundo leen en inglés; y almenos tres cuartos de la información electrónica almacenada están en este idioma.”(Edmundson, W. 2003: 14). As you can see, it is difficult to enter in the labor field without having some fluencyin the use of English.
At the Universidad Nacional is not possible to find bibliography related to English written competency, that’s why we have to base our research in extern material.English is the fundamental language of books, newspapers, airports and air traffic control, international business, academic conferences, science, technology, diplomacy, sports, international competitions, pop music and propaganda. About two thirds ofworld's scientists read in English and at least three quarters of electronic information arestored in this language.
