WRITTEN ASSIGMENT #1
Supreme Court judge Sonia Sotomayor has overcome several obstacles to reach the pinnacle of the legal profession. Originated from an impoverished background growing up in theBronx, NY she lost her father at the age of nine. Raised by a mother who stressed the importance of education she overcame the allure and pitfalls of her neighborhood and graduated Valedictorian fromher high school. From there she received a full academic scholarship to Princeton University, one of only a few Hispanic students at the time to be even enrolled in an Ivy League institution.
It wasat Princeton where Sotomayor began her career as champion for the people. She worked in the admission office at Princeton fighting for deserving under privileged students to be able to attendPrinceton University.
From Princeton, Sotomayor entered Yale Law School again on an academic scholarship. And once again as a champion for the underrepresented, she co shared a group of global students whoadvocated for more minority hiring at Yale. She graduated in 1979 and joined the New York district attorney’s office as an assistant DA. Many in the Latino community could not understand why shewould now prosecute crimes against her people but Sotomayor believed then and now that every crime has a victim that needed to be spoken for she gained a reputation for being relentlessly fair prepareand driven.
Sotomayor became a judge in 1991 in the US District Court of New York, the first Hispanic to do so. Nominated by President Bush she was praised for her compassion in pro bono work forminorities in her community. During this time she had never notable cases in all where she never showed biases but used the letter of the law as her guide. She was a member of the Second Court taskforcefor racial and ethnic fairness in the courts and campaigned for more minorities and women to be on the bench.
