Google Will Sell Brand Names as Keywords in Europe

The Internet giant Google said on Wednesday that it would change its search policy for most of Europe to allow advertisers to buy and use as keywords terms that have been trademarked by others.
The decision will be effective Sept. 14 and extends to the restof Europe changes that were made in Britain and Ireland in 2008. In the United States and Canada, Google has been using the policy since 2004. .
Legal experts have said that the European ruling stopped short of the definitive precedent that Google and brand owners alike had sought. Instead, it contained caveats that could result in a new flurry of lawsuits over the sale of “sponsored links”generated by Google searches.
Google argues that selling brand names as ad keywords to multiple bidders helps consumers because it allows them to find product reviews, sellers of second-hand goods and other information. It stressed that the new policy would not extend to the actual display text in search findings.
“Users will benefit from seeing more relevant ads following a search on Google,” Mr.Novick said.
The company would not speculate how much additional revenue the decision might bring.
AdWords is the bedrock of the company’s success, accounting for approximately 95 percent of revenue.
Last month, Google said its second-quarter revenue rose to $6.82 billion, from $5.52 billion in the equivalent quarter a year ago. Net profit rose to $1.84 billion, from $1.48 billion.

Lebanon IsLatest Country With BlackBerry Concerns

Lebanon will assess security concerns relating to the use of BlackBerry phones in the country, the acting head of the Telecoms Regulatory Authority said on Thursday, the latest country to raise questions about the devices.
The official, Imad Hoballah, said the regulatory agency would start talks with the BlackBerry’s Canadian maker, Research In Motion,over its concerns.
R.I.M. is at odds with the governments of India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over their demands that the company let authorities tap BlackBerry messages delivered using the company’s encryption technology.
”We are studying the issue from all sides — technical, service-wise, economic, financial, legal and security-wise,” he told Reuters. “We are discussing thiswith the concerned administrations and ministries.”
Mr. Hoballah did not say what, if any, decision might be taken over the use of BlackBerrys in the country.

In a Video Game, Tackling the Complexities of Protein Folding

In a match that pitted video game players against the best known computer program designed for the task, the gamers outperformed the software in figuring out how 10 proteinsfold into their three-dimensional configurations.
Proteins are essentially biological nano-machines that carry out myriad functions in the body, and biologists have long sought to understand how the long chains of amino acids that make up each protein fold into their specific configurations.
The researchers took pains to credit the volunteers who competed at Foldit in the last two years, listing“Foldit players” at the end of the report’s author list and noting that more than 57,000 players “contributed extensively through their feedback and gameplay.”
A list of top scores for each puzzle is posted so that players can compare their results. Players may also collaborate in teams, tracking progress on a separate list of group scores.
The Foldit project was inspired by the volunteers whowere contributing the downtime on their home computers to power a protein-folding program called Rosetta@home. The computer donors could see the progress of the program on their screens, and they began to note inefficiencies in the software’s folding approach. That led the scientists to look for ways to systematically harness the skills of the human volunteers.
