Nacióel 30 de abril de 1973, en San Luis, Missouri. Saltó a la fama en 2004 con el single "Locked Up" de su primer álbum Trouble.
Hijo del percusionista Mor Thiam, Akon creció en una familia dedicada a lamúsica y aprendió a tocar varios instrumentos, entre ellos el yembe.
