Hay dos tipos de caballos salvajes: el tarpán y el caballo de Przewalski; algunos autores los consideran como dos especies distintas, mientras que otros mantienen la existencia de una solaespecie, el tarpán; el caballo de Przewalski había sido una raza oriental del anterior. El tarpán era originario de la zona comprendida entre Europa oriental y Mongolia; se extinguió de Europa aprincipios del siglo XIX. Por otro lado, el caballo de Przewalski habitó en Mongolia y parte de China hasta el siglo pasado, la única especie de caballo salvaje que hay en la actualidad; ahora sólo seconserva en cautividad y cuando se cruza con el caballo doméstico produce una progenie fértil (capaz de reproducirse).
