Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receivinga person through a use of force, pressure or other means, for the purpose of abusing them. Australia is a country suffering of human trafficking. Australian authorities believe that traffickers areprimarily of individual operators or small crime groups that often trust on larger organized crime groups to obtain fake documentation.

The Australian Government has increased its efforts toprosecute traffickers. Since 2004, the Australian Federal Police has opened 112 investigations and charged 22 people for human trafficking. Since October 2006, Australia has had four convictions for sextrafficking, four convictions for child sex tourism, and there are currently six sex trafficking and two labor trafficking before the court. Trafficking victims who cooperate with authorities ininvestigations and prosecutions of their traffickers qualify for a temporary visa and a range of social services that provides victims with shelters, counseling, food, and living payments. The AustralianGovernment supports a public awareness campaign with advertisements in daily newspapers that encourage victims and communities to call the police hotline, and widely publicizing prosecutions againsttraffickers.

My delegation suggest all nations join the “Prevention, Protection, and Prosecution” of the UNODC’s plan. In prevention, the UNODC helps to make people aware of these risks by making videoand radio spots (public service announcements), which are broadcast in numerous languages throughout the world. UNODC also runs campaigns with NGOs, distributing written information and contactingactual and potential victims of trafficking.
