Enola Gay
I’m Robert Lewis, I’m famous because I was one of the best pilots of the Second World War. Paul Tibbets is one of my friends, but this is a especial one, because I had good adventureswith him. He says that I’m a lady-killer and philanderer, but also a good person. I’m writing to explain one of the best adventures that we had during the Second World War, when I was 24, with morehair and a better body.
It was a normal day, I was listening the radio when Bob (the commander) sent me a letter saying that I was selected from the US Army Air Force to be the co-pilot for amission. It was amazing to be one of the 12 tribunals.
Next week, I went there and I met Tibbets and he noticed me that he was selected to be the commander of the mission, in order that we had to pilottogether. That was going to be a good mission!
Days ago, we were training to dropped the bomb that the best scientifics and engineers had been making last 3 years in New Mexico, it was the atomicbomb. But this only we knew the ones that we had to attack, the people of the cities didn’t know it.
After a year training, my friends and I were translated to an island called Tinian. We were totallyisolated, we hadn’t any order of the mission. Just before the takeoff we knew that the objective was Hiroshima. Tibbets told me that if the airplane was destroyed, we would have to eat a capsule whichkills you, otherwise Tibbets would shot to the one who refused. Because, the secret of the atomic bomb would be protected. Like always, I took it like a joke and when I saw the face of Tibbets Inoticed that he wasn’t funny. But, from always he was jealous of me.
Hours before takeoff the tension between Tibbets and I was higher. The airplane which was selected was mine, but Tibbets was thecommander, so whit out asking me, he order to put in the airplane the name of his mother: ´Enola Gay`. When I saw it I was upset and we got angry.
