Since life began on Earth, major mass extinctions and several events have led to large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The importance of biodiversity residesin the fact that it supports ecosystem services like air quality, climate, water purification, pollination, and prevention of erosion. Biodiversity's relevance to human health is undeniable. Asscientific evidence builds on the global implications of habitat destruction, the loss of biodiversity is becoming a major international issue. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)states that “the escalating extinction crisis shows that the diversity of nature cannot support the current pressure that humanity is placing on the planet” (IUCN). If this is true, people should knowwhat causes this biodiversity loss in order to fight against it. The loss of global biodiversity could be the result of and increment in the population, an overexploitation of finite natural resourcesand an increment in pollution.
The loss of biodiversity could be attributed to the significant increase of population in the last decades. As population increases, more houses need to be built.Therefore, shallow lakes or ponds are filled for use, and forests are consumed. Even though population growth has slowed, the absolute number of people continues to increase. Don Hinrichsen and Bryant Robeyclaim that as population size reaches levels never before experienced, the environment hangs in the balance (Hinrichsen and Robey). This statement is very close to reality since along with theincrement of population, there is an increment of waste production and a higher demand on infrastructure construction.
