In Glen Ridge the athlete boys were cherished and considered as heroes. When they did something wrong, everyone chose to ignore it and them they get away with whatever they did. The wholetown believed that these boys had good intentions and were just “being boys”. In order for the boys to understand the consequences of their actions, they needed to be punished. Punishmentwould prevent the boys from revisiting their criminal actions. When the boys started being rebellious, they started with minor offenses, but as they got older the crimes became more serious.Everything they did went unpunished and forgiven. The boys took advantage of everyone and the liberty they had throughout their childhood. The town gave the boys the power they felt againsteveryone else, especially females. They believed that they were superior to everyone else, because they could get away with that power. The faculty of Glen Ridge high school wanted to keepup the status of their beloved athletes, so they would rarely punish them at school. Even at home the boys knew they could get away with what they did. Most of them grew up in a householdfull of men and were taught the superiority over women. If someone spoke out about the way the boys abused them from the beginning, they would be punished and learn morals and the differencebetween right and wrong. When all of the boys are together they develop a stronger sense of superiority. When they are alone, they do not feel the same sense of power and entitlement that theydo when they are all together. All the boys felt the need to impress each other and try to outdo each other’s wrong actions. With no guidance towards the right path, these boys had thefreedom to choose the wrong path every time. Being punished for their actions would show the boys that they are not entitled to special treatment in the society or in other areas of their lives.
