Assignment 3. El Verdugo

 Garcia Berlanga, through a film satire of the death penalty, dared show the world the Franquismo society of the time. If the movie is amazing forme nowadays, I can’t imagine the courage and great genius of Berlanga had, in order to photograph the lifestyle of those years when everything was forbidden to show the hypocrisy that existed. Thisfilm, thanks to a large dose of humor, which softens what is shown apparently, could passed by the censors and showed the contradictions of a dictatorship. Also interesting are the subtly dropped namesof other filmmakers like Bergman and Antonioni, Swedish and Italian respectively, who produced films that were banned. 
First of all I will talk about the people of this period, who were more worriedabout what the other people could say than about achieving their dreams. They lived in a context where there was a will there wasn’t a way; where a gray atmosphere - with dull houses , a lack offreedom even to look at married women, the woman as a housewife and the man as a worker, with certificates (which were given by the highest authorities of the time: the church and the civil guard) and thatshowed the “good conduct” , with phrases such as “the rules are the rules”, in short, it was an atmosphere without any color only the color that foreigners brought -, round the daily routine of thepeople.  
Amadeo is the typical conservative man with little education, a traditional man, who thinks that people should act according to laws. If they didn’t do so, what would the neighbors thinkabout it! Jose Luis fits the profile of a young man who dream of a better life, but has given up his dreams because of the time in which he was living. He is pressured by a society to do what no onewants to do and he sees how their life expectations were frustrated by the impositions of the society.
