Es necesario remontarse a principios del siglo XX para entender como a evolucionado el automóvil, su diseño y especialmente su motor, fue nombrado como el invento del siglo además de ser el medio de transporte del 99% de la población mundial. La eficiencia volumétrica nace como solución al excesivo consumo de combustible, y crece en torno al desarrollo científico de los motores, nuevosmateriales, y una carrera que hasta el día de hoy ningún fabricante a logrado ganar, el motor se encuentra en vías de desarrollo comparables con la era espacial, cada día, existe una nueva modificación, una nueva mejora y un nuevo rumbo, el tema medio ambiental es en la actualidad el centro de todas las investigaciones realizas por las fabricas de motores, están han generado con un meritoexcepcional las nuevas generaciones de lo que forman las plataformas motoras de los vehículos del siglo XXI, y el uso de nuevos combustible es el concepto futuro a realizar y llevar a cabo.

Con respecto al tema medio ambiental, la mayoría de los autos que se comercializan hoy en chile constan con un sistema capaz de mejorar en mayor o menor medida sueficiencia, esto debido a las actuales leyes que regulan los niveles de contaminantes en los países de fabricación de la planta motriz, es común ver motores con un sistema de distribución variable, turbocompresores, inyección directa o sistemas de combustible híbridos circular por las calles de Santiago, estos nuevos sistemas desplazaron con creces los antiguos vehículos convencionales y dan a laregión un aire mas limpio y con menores niveles de contaminantes en el ambiente, además de aportar al poco consumo de combustibles fósiles y motivar a las nuevas generaciones al uso de las nuevas tecnologías.
