Born and developed at the hands of the heirs of African slaves. Its beginnings are on the coasts of the United States, where many Jamaicanimmigrants settled in the '50s, mixing rhythms with the influence of black blues and jazz. These early rhythms began taking more of Antillean music influences, resulting in theso-called Ska. Reggae has become the most representative music of Jamaica.
The transition from ska to reggae, came first with the mixture of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz andblues in the '60s. The main difference with the rhythms precursors was the inclusion of letters of great content and social criticism.
Reversed the traditional reggae rockmodels, allowing the guitar maintained the rhythmic tension, with frequent chords out of time, while the bass guitar played melodic patterns. Jimmy Cliff was the firstinternational reggae star, largely due to his starring role in the film The Harder They Come (The Harder They Come, 1973, Perry Henzell) and its soundtrack, which includes a song by JimmyCliff.
Bob Marley was the most prolific singer of the next generation. Influenced by melodies combined with lyrics rebellious soul. His music is inspired by Rastafarianism, amixture of Biblical mysticism and Afro-Caribbean consciousness. Marley sought freedom from oppression and the struggle for rights, while advocating the use of drugs (marijuana) asa sacrament. This belief became popular with the album Natty Dread (1975). At the time of Marley's death in 1981, he and his band The Wailers were known throughout the world.
