John Stuart Mill
I’m considered to be perhaps the most influential English-speaking philosopher and liberal thinker of the 19th Century.
I’ve made important contributions to: logic, empiricism,moral and political philosophy.
.As most of the people should know by now, my philosophy about utilitarianism was influenced by Jeremy Bentham and my father James Mill.
My most important contributionto utilitarianism was made in my work "Utilitarianism" of 1861. In here I did state that the right action resulted in the most happiness for the most people and I insisted that happiness should beassessed not merely by quantity but by quality. In here, is where I differed with Bentham, he treats all forms of happiness as equal.
I also made a qualitative separation of pleasures and said thatthe intellectual and moral pleasures are superior to the physical forms of pleasure.
I developed political doctrines such as Socialism, Libertarianism and Feminism. My contributions were very importantespecially in the area of Political Philosophy, that I just mentioned and also in Ethics.
My most important work in the area of logic“A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive”. I believed thatall knowledge, even mathematics and physical laws, were generally derived from human sensory perceptions. I defined the modern theory of the scientific method “A System of Logic” 1834. This "Systemof Logic" was the attempt of the applicability of methods of science to social as well as purely natural phenomena.
My conception of logic included two types: the formal logic and also the logic ofproof (a logic that would show how evidence tended to prove the conclusions we draw from the evidence). These would lead us to an analysis of causation and at last to inductive reasoning.
In the areaof politics, I also made an important contribution in my work: "On Liberty". In here, I talk about two main concepts: the social liberty and the tyranny of the majority. I defined social liberty,...
