7. In what ways did the work of Copernicus and Galileo differ from the traditional views of the ancient Greeks and of the CatholicChurch?
The traditional view was one of a geocentric universe with planetary motion as described by Ptolemy and the Earth stationary. Copernicus theorized a Sun-centered universe with the Earth assimply another planet which rotated on its axis and orbited the Sun. Galileo found craters and mountains on the Moon, contradicting the traditional view that it is a perfect sphere. Galileo observedfour moons orbiting Jupiter, in contradiction to the traditional view that everything orbits the Earth. In a nutshell, Copernicus and Galileo moved the Earth from the center of the universe.
8. Whatwere five of Galileo's discoveries that were important to science?
Galileo built his first telescope. He focused mainly on physics. He soon made discoveries which shook the foundations of theAristotelian cosmos. He saw mountains, valleys and other features indicating change on the moon. He observed the motion of four of Jupiter's moons, now referred to as the Galilean moons. No longer couldscientists say that heavenly bodies revolve exclusively around the earth. He also observed the phases of Venus, the only explanation of which is that Venus moves around the sun and not the earth.

2. Why did Kepler need Tycho Brahe's data to formulate his laws?
Tycho -He achieved his goal of measuring to one minute of arc. This was atremendous feat before the invention of the telescope. His aim was to confirm his own picture of the universe, which was that the earth was at rest, the sun went around the earth and the planets allwent around the sun - an intermediate picture between Ptolemy and Copernicus.
