Fox and Hounds

You willneed one coloured counter and 4 coloured counter of a different colour. This game can be played on this board or a draughts board.

As in draughts, only the dark squares are used. The four hounds are initially placed on the dark squares at one edge of the board; the fox is placed on any dark square on the opposite edge. The objective of the fox is to cross from one side of the board to the other, arriving at any one of the hounds' original squares; the hounds' objective is to prevent it from doing so.

The hounds move diagonally forward one square. The fox moves diagonally forward or backward one square. There is, however, no jumping, promotion, or removal of pieces. The play alternates with the fox moving first. The player controlling the hounds moves only one of them per turn. The foxis trapped when a hound occupies all four of its potential move squares. Alternatively, two hounds may trap the fox against an edge of the board (other than their original home-row). There is even one corner (see diagram) where a single hound may do the trapping. It may be noted that should a hound reach the fox' original home row, it will no longer have any potential moves. Perfect play willresult in a "hounds" victory.

The game is played on four grids, two for each player. The grids are typically square – usually 10 × 10 – and the individual squares in the grid areidentified by letter and number. On one grid the player arranges ships and records the shots by the opponent. On the other grid the player records his own shots. Before play begins, each player arranges a number of ships secretly on the grid for that player. Each ship occupies a number of consecutive squares on the grid, arranged either horizontally or vertically. The number of squares for eachship is determined by the type of the ship. The ships cannot overlap (i.e., at most one ship can occupy any given square in the grid). The types and numbers of ships allowed are the same for each player. These may vary depending on the rules. There are two typical complements of ships, as given in the Milton Bradley version of the rules: Type of ship Size aircraft carrier 5 battleship 4 destroyer 3...
