PURPOSE

To create a Lava Lamp

HYPOTHESIS

1) If the water and the oil they don’t really mix
2) If the food coloring and the oil they will combine.EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

Into an empty plastic bottle we will pour a 12 oz. of vegetable oil, and then we are going to add enough water to fill it.
We’re a going to squeeze a few drops of food coloringinto a bottle, break the Alka seltzer and set them inside.

MATERIALS

* Clean, plastic soda bottle
* Soda bottle cap
* Vegetable oil (the cheaper the better)
* Food coloring
*Alka-Seltzer tablet
* Water
* It is a great idea to reuse a plastic soda bottle from a recycling bin (just wash it out before beginning the experiment).

PROCEDURE

1) Fill the bottle 3/4full with vegetable oil.
2) Fill the rest of the bottle with water (almost to the top but not overflowing).
3) Add about 10 drops of food coloring. Be sure to make the water fairly dark incolor. Notice that the food coloring only colors the water and not the oil.
4) Divide the Alka-Seltzer tablet into 8 pieces.
5) Drop one of the tiny pieces of Alka-Seltzer into the oil andwater mixture. Watch what happens. When the bubbling stops, add another chunk of Alka-Seltzer. It’s just like a lava lamp!
