1. What do you think was the main reason for the production manager setting up a committee to assess the risks?
Because OHS Act requires employersto consult with their employees to identify and assess
hazards or risks and make decisions about risk control. Establish a committee is one of the
ways to consultation, so as this company has atleast 20 workers and if most of the them wanted
a committee, maybe this was the reason to set it up. This enables the production manager to
obtain worker´s views about manual handling as they know welltheir workplace and can provide
suggestions to improve safety. It is a way to develop an efficient and affordable solution. This is not
only a good business practice but a legal responsibility forthe company.
2. Do you think the production manager made a wise choice in the personnel he chose?
I think is not a matter of personnel choice but a lack of safe work procedures, information andtraining of the workers. If manual handling became a major issue is because there was a lack
of information, training and supervision to ensure a safe workplace. If the workers have to carry
outmanual handling activities, the production manager must provide a safe workplace design,
appropriate equipment and work procedures in the two areas, in order they can perform their work
without risks.Apart from that, the production manager must ensure that the staff he chose could
carry out the tasks, considering worker´s skills, age, experience before they start working.
3. What problemsmay have occurred with his decision?
I do not know to what decision this question refers but I am going to suppose that it refers to
the choice of the staff. He should consider the age, experience andskills of the workers when
choosing them besides informing and training them. If not, as it happened, the workers suffer
injuries because of the manual handling, causing costs to the company. If...
