Parte I: La Faja Petrolífera del Orinoco de Venezuela Venezuela, ubicada en la costa norte de América del Sur, tiene una superficie de 912.050 km2 (352.143 millas cuadradas), con un litoral de 2.800 km (1.740 millas). Limita con Colombia al oeste, Guyana al este y Brasil al sur. Venezuela es un poco más del doble del tamaño de California. Caracas, la capital, se encuentra en sucosta norte. La Faja Petrolífera del Orinoco (FPO) o La Faja se encuentra ubicada en el lado norte de la parte baja del río Orinoco en el este de Venezuela. Cubre un área de aproximadamente 21.240 millas cuadradas y contiene los mayores depósitos del país de petróleo crudo extra-pesado (EHCO por sus siglas en inglés), estimadas en un total 1.360 millones de barriles de petróleo original en sitio(POES por sus siglas en inglés). La magnitud de la Faja ha atraído a empresas de todo el mundo a participar en proyectos para certificar, cuantificar, desarrollar, producir y comercializar los vastos recursos. Esta edición especial (la primera de dos) ha sido elaborada para introducir la Faja a todos aquellos que no han oído hablar del tema. Aunque abarca un amplio espectro, no contiene todos losdetalles de la Faja. Sin embargo, debe servir como punto de partida para aquellos interesados en la propia Faja, petróleo crudo extra-pesado, crudo sintético, refinerías y mejoradores, entre otros temas de interés relacionados. Part I: Venezuela's Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt or Faja Venezuela,located on the northern coast of South America, has an area of 912,050 sq. km (352,143 sq. miles), with a total coastline of 2,800 km (1,740 miles). It is bordered by Colombia to the west, Guyana to the east, and Brazil to the south. Venezuela is a little more than twice the size of California. Caracas, the capital, is located on its northern coast. The Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt or the Faja, islocated on the northern side of the lower Orinoco River in eastern Venezuela. It covers an area of approximately 21,240 square miles and contains the country's largest deposits of extra-heavy crude oil (EHCO), estimated to total 1,360 billion barrels of Original Oil In Place (OOIP). The magnitude of the Faja has attracted companies from around the world to participate in projects to certify, quantify,develop, produce and commercialize the vast resources. This special edition (the first of two) has been produced to introduce the Faja to the layman. While wide-ranging, it does not contain every detail about the Faja. However, it should serve as a starting point for those interested in the Faja itself, EHCO, syncrude, refineries and upgraders, among other associated topics of interest.
