Mexico, 200 years of Independence
During the last 200 years, Mexico not only gained its independence, but began a cultural and economic exchange with the rest of the world, unthinkable during thedays of its colonial era.
Today I will explore some of the influences these exchanges have left and how, nevertheless, Mexico has been able to keep its traditions and costumes.
Everyday, in any bigcity in this country all we see is American fast-food chains, European cars, foreign products and advertising. I wonder when was the last time you buy Mexican clothes, instead of going to Abercrombie,Hollister or whatever?
Well, I will answer you with a little story: In the nineteen century a man named Thomas Nast draw a fat, old and sweet character that years later a big company calledCoca-Cola would dress in red and make him famous all around the world. Yes, if you are thinking about Santa Clause, you are right.
Many countries have adopted this character in their Christmas traditions,accepting that gifts, money and material things are more important. But, in spite that Mexicans share a three thousand kilometers border with the United States, we still believe in Jesus child and thethree wise men.
In Mexico, people know that the meaning of Christmas is not a guy that gives you material things that sooner or later, will broke o disappear. We know that the meaning of Christmas isLove, is a period of time for sharing with the ones that does not have anything. So our country has demonstrated that even when they try to bombard our minds with their American things we arestronger! AND WE STILL BELIVE IN OUR TRADITIONS.
But there is a problem, with time this believes had change and the young people of today had let themselves influences by the internet and they start toforgot of the importance of being part of a nation.
