My Long Lost Twin
It all began on the fourteenth of February, also known as Valentine’s Day. It was an early day. I was getting ready to go to the airport. Select member of the Model United Nations team of my school and I were going to Washington D.C. to attend NAIMUN XLIX. I was extremely excited to go and did not possibly imagine that this was the day where my entire life was going to change.After checking in our bags, we headed towards the gate to our plane. I sat next to Isabel and we talked about Gilmore Girls during the entire ride. Once we landed in Washington D.C, there was a lot of people in the airport. It was very interesting how many different types of people from all over the world were there that day; most of them were there for the same reason as we—NAIMUN XLIX. Onour way to the hotel, we all began to talk about all the different people would meet and befriend. A few people from the group and I decided to make it a little bit more interesting: we each had to find and befriend someone who looked the most like you by the end of the conference. Whoever finds a person that looks most like them gets five dollars from each person in the group participating in thischallenge. Once we got to the hotel, our search had officially begun.
As the first couple of days passed by, I began to worry because I could not find absolutely anybody that looked even slightly like me and the trip was about to come to an end. However, I had already befriended three girls who offered to help me with the challenge. We all kept our eyes open that day.
During the lunch break,as we were rushing to get our food, my friend, Lorraine, came rushing from Starbucks. She was out of breath and could barely make any words. Lorraine then showed me a very blurry picture of a girl that strangely looked a little like me. Lorraine swore she looked like my exact replica but I couldn’t believe it. She sounded insane, so the rest of us decided to just check this girl out later.Lorraine was not pleased and wouldn’t sit until we saw this girl with our own eyes once and for all. We gave in and decided to just get it over with. On our way to Starbucks, I began thinking that, if Lorraine was right about this girl, I could possibly win. I became excited and started walking faster. Once we got there, Lorraine went up to the girl and asked her to come up for a picture. The girl was alittle confused but went along with it anyway. As she got closer, I could not believe my eyes. For a second, I actually event thought I was just hallucinating; I was not. This girl looked exactly like me in every way possible. We all stood there, speechless. The girl began to laugh nervously as we exchanged looks of amazement.
She told us her name and I explained why I wanted her picture. ThenI told her that we should meet up later tonight to get to know each other. She accepted my offer and said we’d meet up at Starbucks after committee is over.
It was time and I went to meet up with Diana. We began to talk about each other so that we could learn a little bit about ourselves. Interestingly enough, we had a lot in common. Both of us enjoyed the same kind of music, we were into thesame subjects at school, we had the same taste in boys and both of us were the charismatic, confident and introverted type of girls. I had never before met someone so much like me, both physically and mentally.
As we talked about the holidays we liked, I told her my birthday was on Saint Patrick’s Day. She paused and nervously said that it was her birthday as well. As thought it wasn’t creepyenough that we looked exactly the same, having the same birthday was too much to take in. This conversation leads to a more serious one where we began speaking of our backgrounds, including our parents. Diana explained that she was adopted.
