From BATNA’s to Success
As the writer was sitting in her room trying to untangle the mess of BATNA’s, interests, problems and objective criteria, her little brother came in and made everythingclear. No, he hadn’t read Getting to Yes, but his simple proposition “take me to the movies and I’ll clean your room” turned every single one of those abstract concepts into something she could use in herdaily life. Quite unconsciously, she started focusing on the interests: he wanted to see a girl; she wanted her room clean before her mom got home. She separated the problem: he was in a hurry, shehad homework to do. And, after surprisingly little discussion they agreed that she would take him to a movie at 7 instead of at 6, so she would have most of her homework done which she would finish whenthey got back.
After this quite fruitful negotiation, the writer had gathered the courage to extrapolate what she had just learned to a really big challenge she would be facing in a near future:WORLDMUN. Here, the best students of many universities worldwide will be acting as delegates, getting into the skin of another country, defending interests, and, most probably, using every lastresource to do an outstanding job.
Before tackling this challenge, she was clear that there was one thing to do first: In order to develop her strengths, she had to know her weaknesses. As the famousChinese proverb wisely says “Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power”. To achieve that “true power” she began byremembering the “too-much” or “too-few” of her previous experiences.
Something jumped to her mind quickly: most of the times, she came on too strong while debating. Even though having solid argumentswas a positive thing, it was not ok to be seen as “aggressive” or “difficult to reach”. This mostly occurred because she took things too personally.
