Identificación: Gran tamaño con el cuello largo, la cabeza pequeña, alargada y aplanada por encima; pelaje blanco o blanco amarillento (en verano); ojos, punta el hocico, garras y piel negros. 
Tamaño: Longitud cabeza-cuerpo: 180-250 cm (365 cm es el valor máximo) altura en la cruz 100-160 m. 
Peso: 150-500 kg (1.000 kg como valor máximo). 
Distribución: Zonacircumpolar del hemisferio norte 
Hábitat: Costas boreales y mares cubiertos de hielo en el borde sur de la banquisa permanente; durante gran parte del año, su hábitat preferido es la zona del “pack ice” o banquisa estacional. 

Alimentación: Régimen predominantemente carnívoro; en verano, al ser más difícil la captura de focas, su régimen es casi omnívoro, y se compone de bayas, hierba, raíces,...
