Throughout modernity, play has been linked to pedagogy, whether as a means of straightforward instruction and training, or more broadly as a socialising process. Critically assess two contemporary examples of the pedagogical use of play. What are players to learn through play and how are they to do so? What problems might there be to usingplay to promote learning?

Introduction
The use of play in pedagogy is becoming more and more common in the world today. First of all it is important to understand what the pedagogy of play actually means. According to Robert Farné, ―pedagogy of play‖ focuses on the educational value of play.1 In order to fully understand this, we must first understand the difference between ―play‖ and ―games‖.While this difference could be discussed for a long time, for this essay we will say that play is something more free and unstructured, while games usually have more structure and rules.2 In this paper I will analyses two contemporary examples of the pedagogical use of play. First, I will discuss who can play, who can learn from play and what can be learned from play. I will then focus on thepedagogical use of play in the early educational development of young children. My second analysis will be on learning a second language through play and games and the importance of role-play to improve a better strategy of learning. For both examples, I will show what the players should learn through playing and how they are to do so. I will also discuss some of the problems there might be when usingplay to promote learning.

Indeed, according to Gina Kemp, Melinda Smith, Bernie DeKoven, and Jeanne Segal, humans are born to play and play is ―instinctive and fundamental to our exercise‖.

Indeed, it is believedthat play is both a source of calmness and relaxation, as well as a source of

stimulation for the brain and body.4 The importance of play in early childhood is crucial and through play, children learn the basics of life and perhaps the most complex lessons. According to Marge Hampton, play is a child work. 5 ―Games, giggles, pushing, pulling, stacking, sorting and shaping are all ways in which thechild learn about the world. Playing come naturally to a child and has undisputed physical, psychological and social benefit‖.6 But playing is not only a child job, it is also a child’s right. Indeed, according to Article 31.1 of the
