Ataques deNervios (nervous attacks) are cultural expressions of distress utilized by Puerto Ricans and other Latino groups to signal other people they are in need of emotional help. I did not know that what Ilisten from my neighbors and every other woman in my country complain about was an object of study of formal research, at least not until this past summer. I learned about Dr. Peter Guarnaccia’s workon ataques de nervios during my participation in a graduate training program at Rutgers University’s Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. Project L/EARN (Summer 2008) allowed meto have a “hands-on” research experience that solidified my desire to pursue graduate studies in Clinical Psychology with the hopes of developing a research career within this field. Therefore, I amlooking for another opportunity that will help me further enhance my research experience and identify a potential graduate program.
I worked with Dr. Guarnaccia to assess the relationship betweennervios (nervous) categories and socioeconomic status. I performed secondary data analyses using statistical analyses (e.g., Chi square, multivariate linear regression. independent samples T test). Ianalyzed four hundred and forty-one patients’ responses to two questionnaires, one regarding demographic information and a second one on nervous and dissociative experiences. Results from my study...
